The Vietnam Trip 2010

When my youngest daughter graduated school I decided it was time for me to pick up my 'single' life where I had left it off over twenty four years ago and go traveling alone. Having traveled frequently with the girls the challenge wasn't in the departure from anything, it was in the challenge of my own company, with no one but myself to manage, take care of , inspire, make do things, take risks for and feed regularly.. The next challenge was adapting to the changed way in which we travel..the furled up pages of the India Lonely Planet Guide 1984 is as redundant as a chalk board..everything is immediate, done online and if you really play the game, heavily discounted. I booked tickets back in January on Air Asia in one of their sales, 120 US$ return from Kuala Lumpur, and then a week before leaving sat down at the lap top, signed into agoda and made hotel bookings..rooms for $65 as cheap as $11 ..I plotted a route, took advice from friends and packed light..what happens next? ..I'll let you know...

This morning I was able to connect to Sykpe and call Severen, it looked like a cold Melbourne morning. The government has given her a scholarship for books and she is happy at the prospect of the new semester and enjoying having her sister in town. It was great to have a chat...seeing her on the screen was a lovely start to the day..Yeah Zaba! And this one is Bella on the beach..I am so proud of my girls! Well done on your IB results Bella, I am very happy for you that all your work paid off, all that study and stress and of course your efforts at maintaining a balanced life style throughout, well done indeed!

Bahamania - days of luxury and leisure

My journey to the Bahamas was incredible, the location is stunning, there's no rubbish on the beach, and while the underwater environment, although clean, seems a little devoid of life it seems the resort does good things to encourage growth and minimize harm..People are friendly, I found out there were original inhabitants but they were taken by the Spanish to be slaves elsewhere and then the British left Africans freed after the abolition of slavery to live in The Bahamas as free men and women. There are words like Goombay and Jankanoo that are Bahamanian and refer to festivals but are also the names of drinks and corn chips...

June 2016 Cheating a bit.  I wrote this trip up for Gaia Discovery and have copied the piece here with some additions that are more personal: After an arduous and extended journey of delays, technical problems and missed connections I stumbled into a smoky Medan bar in the middle of Ramadan to be greeted with beer. What a relief!  Here in the esteemed company of some true leaders in worldwide environmental protection, people with victories under their belts and lifetime’s of experience, I sat to gather myself and enjoy the beer but before a moment has passed a challenge was issued: “Why are you going to take a bunch of kids into the forest, why not just leave the animals alone and watch a program about it on tv?”  No names obviously, but these were real experts in their field, worn out and feeling cynical at the end of a hard week's negotiations, of battling to save what may not be salvageable, grinding against the deal that we have made to bring kids in to raise the
